I’m still at a loss to understand why neural-net learning has ever been called “AI” in the first place, given that the popular definition of artificial intelligence implies artificial *sentience*. Now almost everyone is even labelling their toasters as having “AI” just because they monitor more than one variable (I exaggerate, but not by much). One would think we’d come up with a better term for machine learning (perhaps… “machine learning”?) to stop misrepresenting products by claiming that we’ve created digital lifeforms that can actually think.

In fact, I’d like The Guardian to instruct their AI “Write an article that debunks the myth that current artificial intelligence can actually think. Use as many words as needed to provide a convincing argument” — and to post it without editing, just so we can see exactly how much editing they supposedly didn’t need.
